In the morning of 21th December 1992, the Martinair Flight 495 was attempting to land on runway 11 at Faro Airport, Portugal, when the aircraft flew through at least two microbursts spawned by a large thunderstorm, which was accompanied by heavy rain and low cloud. Following a hard landing, the starboard main gear collapsed, with fire erupting after the right wing fuel tank ignited. The DC-10 cracked in two and came to a rest with the front section laying on its side. The aircraft carried 13 crew members and 327 passengers, mainly holidaymakers from the Netherlands. Fifty-four passengers and 2 crew members died and 106 of the other occupants were badly injured.
Passing 20 years of this terrible accidente, it?s time to remember it?s victims.
For that, the Portuguese Division will host a "Fly Inn" Memorial at Faro Airport on 21th December 2012.
